MEGASONEX® combines the best of ultrasonic and sonic technology into one incredibly gentle yet extremely effective electric toothbrush. It emits powerful therapeutic 1.6MHz ultrasound, shown by leading dental experts to break up bacterial chains that make up plaque, so a uniquely gentle low-amplitude form of sonic vibration can take care of the rest. 1.6MHz ultrasound in oral hygiene has been approved by the US FDA since 1992 and deemed safe and effective.

An icon of design, inspired by the very best in luxury pen ergonomics, this compact precision instrument has smooth contours and is evenly weighted to make brushing feel effortless. The brush heads are small and manoeuvrable like the tools dentists use for precise cleaning, crafted with genuine Tynex® fibres expertly polished to minimise damage to the teeth and gums. It is designed with travellers in mind, with a rigid rattle-proof travel case and our proprietary Megabattery® that powers weeks of use with just one charge. Each brush comes in a luxurious presentation box and is built to uncompromising standards, making it the perfect gift or personal investment. After all, a beautiful smile is priceless.

The MEGASONEX® toothbrush is a professional quality dental hygiene device designed for everyday home use and is dentist-recommended. It is especially recommended for dental patients with gingivitis (bleeding gums) or periodontitis, with restorations (fillings), orthodontic brackets (braces), veneers, implants, crowns, dentures, and for teeth whitening patients.

Features
Real ultrasound (1.6MHz)

Whenever it’s on, the Megacrystal® automatically converts electrical impulses into ultrasound at the therapeutic 1.6MHz frequency used in advanced medical devices, allowing for truly ultrasonic brushing and truly ultrasonic tongue cleaning, something no other brush offers. Since ultrasound is too small, too fast and too quiet for humans to see, feel or hear, a blue indicator lets you know that ultrasound is being emitted.

Genuine Megacrystal®

Ultrasound is generated by a 17mm Megacrystal® embedded into the tip of the brush with great precision by master technicians using a highly advanced process to maximise wave propagation and enable precise directionality. Unlike other toothbrushes with disposable ultrasound transducers, the high-quality Megacrystal® is designed to last for life.

Choice of sonic vibration

Combining the advantages of ultrasound with the extra benefits of sonic vibration, the toothbrush also includes an oscillating vibrator motor with variable speed options to supplement the ultrasound: 18,000 vibrating movements per minute (150Hz), comparable to a sonic toothbrush from the leading brands; 9,000 movements per minute (75Hz) for a gentler experience, comparable to a low intensity power toothbrush or, for the gentlest experience, pure ultrasound with no sonic movement at all, so it feels like and functions as a manual toothbrush, only with the incredible cleaning power of ultrasound.

Gentle low-amplitude motion

In contrast to a sonic toothbrush or other conventional electric toothbrushes, an ultrasonic toothbrush does not need to rely solely on the brute force of mechanical scrubbing. Since the ultrasound has already torn apart the plaque, sonic vibrations are only needed to gently sweep away the debris. This means that even the subtlest sonic action can be effective. The MEGASONEX® toothbrush uses special low-amplitude sonic movements. These minimise the force and length of bristle travel, making for an incredibly gentle brushing experience in comparison with almost any electric toothbrush. Ultrasound is merely a form of acoustic wave making it even more gentle. The amplitude of our ultrasonic pulse is so infinitesimally small that it is completely imperceptible to the human body.

High-capacity battery

The proprietary Megabattery® can store enough power to last for many weeks on a single charge. A combination of advanced ionic chemistry and intelligent charging logic ensures that the life of the rechargeable battery is maximised.

Ergonomic form

Sculpted to feel like an extension of your hand, the MEGASONEX® toothbrush has sleek contours, balanced weighting and a compact form. This ensures that it is universally comfortable to hold and easy to grip for men, women and children alike, whether held horizontally or vertically. Designed to be simple and intuitive, with a minimalist design featuring a single button and careful attention paid to the geometry of each element and the placement of each finger, brushing has never felt so effortless.

Precision control

Choosing the right implement is essential to good oral hygiene, as control is vital to effective cleaning, something no amount of force can make up for. That’s why we created a precision dental instrument based on the latest science and formed to function, not just a mere electric toothbrush. Careful scientific testing and meticulous engineering led to a slim manoeuvrable design and a compact brush head, to target every corner of the mouth with maximum efficacy, for oral cavities of all shapes and sizes, both for adults and kids.

Polished bristles

Irresponsible toothbrush manufacturers slice their bristles straight across, but this can leave dangerously sharp corners that can cut the gums and abrade tooth surfaces, which could lead to permanent enamel damage. To help protect the teeth and gums, we carpet each brush head with a dense array of bristles that we fashion from ultra-supple Dupont Tynex® fibres, then polish to perfection using a special machine to smooth off the sharp edges of the bristle tips. As dental professionals differ in their opinions of the pros and cons of different types of bristle configurations, for maximum choice we offer both soft and medium bristles in either flat or sawtooth configurations.

Twist-lock attachment system

Our twist-lock fastener securely positions replacement heads in place with a snug fit to enable maximum transmission of ultrasound yet its meticulous craftsmanship ensures that changing them is an effortless gesture.

Optional tongue cleaner

Because cleaning the tongue is an essential part of any oral hygiene routine, as your mouth isn’t really clean until your tongue is clean as well, we offer a unique ultrasonic tongue scraper attachment to turn your toothbrush into the world’s first and only ultrasonic tongue cleaner.

Helps fight gingivitis

Periodontal diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis, result from plaque bacteria accumulating under the gumline in periodontal pockets, the tight spaces between the teeth and gums where air cannot reach, where harmful anaerobic (oxygen hating) bacteria thrive. In contrast to sonic and electric toothbrushes, which rely on mechanical movement alone to clean teeth, ultrasonic toothbrushes disseminate waves which propagate up to 5mm away (Vandana and Penumatsa 2004, Hashizume and Dariva 2015), extending into areas where bristles cannot reach, including spots where plaque accumulates under the gumline.

Ideal for braces, implants and sensitivity

The gentle yet effective combination of sonic vibration and ultrasound makes the MEGASONEX® toothbrush ideal for situations requiring delicate yet thorough cleaning, such as in the nooks and crannies of fragile orthodontic brackets, crowns, bridges, implants, veneers and inlays. Its gentleness also makes it ideal for patients who have recently undergone oral surgery, who have problems such as pain from sensitivity, receding gums, or who need to minimise wear on easily breakable dental work like braces, old fillings and thin fissure sealants.

Waterproof to IP68

For maximum safety and durability, the redundant gaskets and ultrasonic welding of the toothbrush handle help to prevent dust ingress and maintain water resistance up to the rigorous IP68 ratings standard attained by legendary watches and naval machinery.

USB-C Charging

The toothbrush charges via USB-C technology, featuring a splashproof USB-C port on the inductive charging base, a professional quality USB-A to USB-C cable and bathroom-safe USB charger, for safe and easy charging when you’re on the go.

Safe low-voltage inductive charger

Each charging base recharges the toothbrush through inductive charging and, thanks to our unique innovation, the power input of the charging dock is restricted to a harmless 12V5V direct current to maximise electrical safety. For added safety, the charger uses marine grade circuitry and features a detachable cord for your convenience.

Phthalate and BPA-free

To minimise dangers of outgassing of phthalates and contact with bisphenol A (BPA), which research (Konieczna et al 2015) has shown can imitate hormones in the body and disrupt the endocrine system, potentially causing serious side effects including cancer (Ibid.), issues during pregnancy (Pergialiotis et al 2017) and with infant development, we have constructed a brush with an exterior that is absolutely free from these materials. For maximum durability, the handle is formed exclusively out of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), a premium quality polymer, while the brush heads are crafted out of pure food grade PP (polypropylene) plastic, a soft plastic commonly used in BPA-free baby bottles.

Hypoallergenic

Designed with holistic wellness in mind, without forgetting those with special needs, the outer materials of our products are constructed entirely with food grade hypoallergenic materials.

Airplane safe

Because the Megabattery® uses lithium-free technology, it is fully compliant with IATA (International Air Transport Association) aviation safety rules (Special Provision A123) for battery operated electronic devices.

Rattle-proof travel case

Our rigid travel case with internal supports holds the brush in a fixed orientation for maximum protection of the delicate bristles. It also helps to secure the toothbrush so that it does not inadvertently power on and suspiciously vibrate when travelling. Strategically placed air holes facilitate proper ventilation to minimise bacterial presence on the bristles. Its compact shape ensures that no space is wasted, so that it can easily fit in most washbags.

Universal power

No matter which plug you select, each converter has a built-in transformer that is compatible with 100-240V AC power at either 50 or 60Hz, covering the domestic electricity standards of every country on earth.

Iconic design

After careful study involving scientific reviews of how to use an electric toothbrush in a real-world setting, legendary designers in California and Japan created an original work of beauty with a truly timeless design inspired by Bauhaus principles that’s classic yet modern, where every detail is as it is meant to be.

Professional quality

Designed to exceed the exacting criteria of the world’s top ranking dentists, each toothbrush is built to the highest possible specifications using the best materials money can buy and assembled by expert craftsmen under the guidance of experienced engineers. Top-of-the-line components do not come cheap, but we believe it’s worth it at any cost if it means we produce the best toothbrush on the market. Before we mark each toothbrush with the MEGASONEX logo and offer it for sale, it goes through a thorough quality control procedure, with a quality test at each major step of the manufacturing process. Quality specialists review the quality of each toothbrush and test how it works, rating waterproofness and ultrasound output to certify that it performs to a level of effectiveness for which there is no comparison.

Environmentally friendly

For a minimal carbon footprint, we developed a unique SmartCircuit™ that deals with the power consumption of the toothbrush, ensuring that energy usage is as economical as possible and battery life is maximised, reducing waste. An automatic timer determines when the circuitry should be online. Power consumption logic tailored to the chemistry of the battery makes it possible for the brush to use only what is required when charging and switches the rate of charge as needed. We comply with the latest environmental standards for battery powered electronics. For ultimate sustainability, we build to the highest standards and sell each new kit in a reusable black gift box.

Socially responsible

We never make compromises when it comes to our ethical standards. We have a strict companywide policy against animal testing. We compare and shop around for the best suppliers to buy from and work closely with our manufacturers to verify that each and every worker is treated with the care and respect they deserve.

Ultrasound science
Sonic is not ultrasonic

Sonic toothbrushes are not the same as ultrasonic toothbrushes. Sonic toothbrushes clean with mechanical scrubbing vibrations produced by a mechanical motor that happen to occur at a frequency fast enough to generate audible sound. Humans hear cyclical movements at frequencies ranging between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second (20Hz to 20kHz), which is referred to as the sonic frequency range. A typical sonic toothbrush will operate at a frequency several thousand times slower than the frequency of an ultrasonic toothbrush. For example, a sonic toothbrush producing 40,000 movements per minute is equivalent to 667 movements per second or 333Hz, which is 4800 times slower than the ultrasonic frequency of the MEGASONEX® toothbrush.

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a form of acoustic pressure wave (sound wave) with movements too high in frequency (too fast) for humans to perceive. Ultrasound should not be confused with electromagnetic radiation, such as emitted by mobile phones. Technically, anything above 20kHz (2.4 million movements per minute) is ultrasonic. However, the MEGASONEX® toothbrush operates in the megasonic range of ultrasound, at a frequency which is 80 times faster.

Do they work?

The combination of ultrasound and low amplitude sonic motion fights plaque in a way no other technology can. An experiment conducted by experts from one of the best ranking research universities (Hashizume and Dariva 2015) found that ultrasound generated by the MEGASONEX® toothbrush is able to break up the chains of Streptococcus mutans bacteria that make up plaque and sever their method of attachment to the tooth surface, rendering them harmless. They also found that supplementing the ultrasound with additional low-amplitude sonic vibration from the MEGASONEX® toothbrush enhances the cleaning efficacy even more, by sweeping up any remaining debris, leaving the surfaces of the teeth even cleaner.

Hashizume LN, Dariva A. Effect of sonic vibration of an ultrasonic toothbrush on the removal of Streptococcus mutans biofilm from enamel surface. Am J Dent. 2015; 28: 347-350.

How it works: Ultrasound

Ultrasound is generated by the Megacrystal®, our proprietary piezoelectric transducer crystal, which has special chemical and physical properties that allow it to convert electricity into motion. As soon as the button is pressed, the SmartCircuit™ powers on the brush, drawing energy from the Megabattery® and transmitting it to the Megacrystal® in pulses at a rate of 1.6 million times per second. Each time an electrical impulse flows into the Megacrystal® the electrical charge causes it to expand in volume. Then, when the electrical impulse flows out, the Megacrystal® contracts back to its original size. These two movements together form an oscillation cycle. As the Megacrystal® does not operate in a vacuum, its movement impacts the movement of the molecules around it, moving the surroundings as well. As this back-and-forth movement propagates, it creates an ultrasound wave, which is identical to a sound wave except for the fact that the speed of its movements is significantly faster. This ultrasonic wave ripples through the bristles and saliva until it reaches plaque and breaks its bacterial chains apart.

How it works: Sonic vibration

In order to produce sweeping motions, which involve movements thousands of times slower over a longer distance in comparison with the ultrasound, sonic vibration is generated by a micromotor, similar to the type of motor that moves an electric car but at a much smaller scale. In contrast to the Megacrystal®, our electromotor converts electricity to movement using magnetism. Surrounding the inner workings of the motor is a large curved fixed magnet. Inside the fixed magnet lies an electromagnet with reversing poles, created by pulsing electricity through an intricate series of coils, which generates an electromagnetic field. As the poles of the electromagnet alternate in polarity, they become attracted to opposite sides of the fixed magnet, switching back and forth with every cycle. This results in the poles spinning in a continuous cycle at a frequency within the audible range. As the magnet spins, it revolves an axle connected to an asymmetrical weight. As the weight shifts orientation, it continuously shifts the centre of gravity of the brush, producing movement which results in sonic vibration of the brush head.

How fast is it?

The Megacrystal® operates at a frequency of 1.6MHz, similar to the ultrasonic frequency used in medicine to heal broken bones. A megahertz is defined as one million cycles per second. This means that it turns 1,600,000 pulsations per second into 1.6 million oscillations. Since each oscillation cycle involves both a forward and backward movement, this is equivalent to 3.2 million movements per second, or 192 million movements per minute.

The sonic frequency motor of the MEGASONEX® toothbrush by default spins at 9,000 rpm (rotations, or cycles, per minute), creating 18,000 vibration movements per minute, which is equivalent to 150Hz. When activated in low-frequency mode, it instead spins at 4,500 rpm, creating 9,000 movements per minute, equivalent to 75Hz.
All values are approximate.

Is it safe?

The 1.6MHz frequency used by the MEGASONEX® toothbrush is deemed a therapeutic frequency, as it has a long history of use for treating broken bones, healing lacerations, treating aphthous stomatitis and other medical applications. Leading scientists around the world have studied its benefits and safety extensively. It has been approved for use in a toothbrush for more than a quarter century by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA).

For utmost safety the MEGASONEX® toothbrush operates at a reduced power output and uses low amplitude movements, with technology very different from that found in sonic or ultrasonic scalers. This ensures that the power output of the toothbrush is far below the threshold determined to be safe by the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Because ultrasound is not a form of electromagnetic radiation, unlike with X-rays or radio waves emitted by mobile phones, there is absolutely no danger of EMF exposure.

Intended use
The MEGASONEX® toothbrush is designed for daily home use with a toothpaste of your choice. It can easily be used by individuals with braces, crowns, implants, veneers and restorations (fillings) and is intended to be used to fight gingivitis and plaque formation which often lead to gum bleeding and recession, calculus and caries (cavities). Note that the MEGASONEX® toothbrush emits therapeutic ultrasound, not electromagnetic radiation such as that used by mobile phones or metal detectors.
Charging your toothbrush

Plug the cord into the charging base and the voltage converter into an electrical outlet. When you place the handle of the brush into the charging base, the power indicator light on the handle will start to pulse red when the battery is fast charging. The pulsing red light will turn solid white when it is about 70% charged. It will then trickle charge to 100% for up to 18 hours. After this point, the white light will turn off and the brush will stop charging during the next 30 hours in order to save electricity. Afterwards, the brush will wake up and may start charging again. It cannot be overcharged since the battery will stop accepting a charge when full.

Taking the brush in and out of the charging base will reactivate the charging mechanism and the 18-hour timer. Keeping the brush in the charger after the white light goes on will not damage the brush.

The MEGASONEX® toothbrush should be charged immediately after purchase for 18 hours prior to first use and, whether used or not, must be charged at least every two months thereafter. Failure to do so may cause permanent damage to the battery and void the warranty.

A full charge on a new battery should last for approximately 2840 three-minute uses. As with all batteries, over time the capacity will decrease, lowering the number of uses per charge. Even though we use latest generation memory-free batteries, to prolong the life of any battery, we recommend that every few months you discharge your toothbrush completely before recharging it for the full 18 hours.

The voltageUSB power converter is designed to accept 100-240V AC, 50-60Hz. When traveling overseas an appropriate adapter plug is all that is required.

Note: Do not place the charging base on a metallic surface when charging.

Your charger can also be used to hold your toothbrush on the countertop without the cord.

Attaching brush heads
Grasp the upper section of the brush head with one hand. With the other hand, twist the lock on the neck of the brush head in the direction of the arrow about a one-eighth turn to the right. Align the brush head above the wand of the brush handle so that the bristles are on the same side as the button. Slide the brush head over the wand until the locking ring rests on the brush handle. Twist the lock on the brush head opposite to the direction of the arrow about a one-eighth turn to the left to lock it in place.
Removing brush heads
Grasp the upper section of the brush handle with one hand. With the other hand, twist the lock on the neck of the brush head in the direction of the arrow about a one-eighth turn to the right. Slide the brush head off the wand gently. Please be sure to unlock the brush head lock before you try to remove the brush head. Failure to do so can result in physically breaking the brush handle, which is not covered by the warranty. To ensure that brush heads remain easy to take off, remove them every few days to clean buildup off the locking mechanism and wand. For brush heads that become difficult to remove, we recommend first running warm water over the brush head lock to soften any toothpaste buildup.
Brushing instructions
For optimal performance, your MEGASONEX® toothbrush should be fully charged. Follow these simple steps to maximise the effectiveness of your brushing:

  1. Wet the bristles under running water and place toothpaste on the brush head. To ensure even and thorough brushing, mentally divide your mouth into six sections.
  2. Position the bristles in the back section of your bottom teeth angled 45° into the gumline and turn the brush on. Hold the toothbrush handle with a light grip. Avoid scrubbing or pressing too hard on the tooth surface to the point where the bristles bend. Move the brush in small circular motions so the bristles and fluid penetrate between each tooth. Try to keep as much fluid around the bristles as possible. Gently move the brush covering all surfaces of each tooth starting from the buccal (cheek) side, then the occlusal (biting) side (in the case of the back teeth), and then the lingual (tongue) side. Spend a few seconds on each tooth and then move the brush to the next tooth. Spend extra time gently working the bristles into the periodontal pockets where plaque collects below the gumline. Ask your dental professional for help in identifying these areas.
  3. After 30 seconds you will be prompted to move to the next section. Continue for a total of 3 minutes until you have covered all the teeth. Afterwards, the toothbrush will turn off by itself.
Teeth whitening
The MEGASONEX® toothbrush will help to remove fresh surface stains. However, no toothbrush can significantly remove deep staining of enamel or discolouration of the dentine from years of neglect that may require professional whitening.
Selection and replacement of brush heads

Nearly all dentists now agree that brushing with a hard bristled toothbrush can damage tooth enamel and irritate the gums, which can lead to gum recession. This is why they recommend gentle toothbrushes. Therapeutic ultrasound is extremely gentle… so gentle that it is impossible to see or feel its action. However, hard bristles can negate this beneficial effect. This is why we offer a choice of four different kinds of brush heads: soft and medium, with either flat-top or sawtooth bristles.

Our brush heads are designed to maintain their shape and effectiveness for approximately two months of regular use, depending on personal habits.

Speed selection
The device can be used in one of three modes:

  1. Ultrasound plus gentle sonic vibration (press button once)
    • Ultrasound at 1.6MHz
    • Sonic vibration at 18,000 movements per minute
  2. Ultrasound plus extra-gentle sonic vibration (press button twice, a half second apart)
    • Ultrasound at 1.6MHz
    • Sonic vibration at 9,000 movements per minute
  3. Ultrasound only (press button three times, a half second apart)
    • Ultrasound at 1.6MHz
    • No sonic vibration (except as timer interval prompt)

The blue light indicates when ultrasound is being emitted.

Cleaning and maintenance

Every few days, remove the brush head and clean the body of the brush with a damp soapy cloth. Remove the soap residue with a clean damp cloth. It is not a good idea to completely immerse in water, even though the parts have been factory sealed to prevent water penetration.

Periodically clean the charging base by first disconnecting it from the voltage converter and then cleaning with a damp cloth. Be careful not to saturate or immerse the charging base into water. Let completely dry.

Each time after brushing, it is a good idea to rinse your brush head in cold clean water, to shake off excess moisture and to dry the bristles and brush handle with a clean towel, pinching the bristles together in the process.

Keep away from sunlight or UV sanitisers as UV light can cause plastic to yellow with time, which is a cosmetic change not covered by the warranty.

Recycling
The toothbrush contains a high quality NiMH battery that should serve for many years. Any service of the toothbrush and battery removal can only be done by an authorised MEGASONEX Repair Centre. Opening the toothbrush or any attempt to modify or repair it by unauthorised personnel will break the waterproof seals and will void the warranty. At the end of its serviceable life, the entire brush should be discarded per your local disposal regulations for electrical devices.
